Supreme Battle
John Roberts has been nominated for the Supreme Court. Call this number (I think it is right) to speak to your Senators asking for an up and down vote on Roberts-- (202) 224-3121
Roberts is Catholic, and is likely strongly Pro-Life from past statements. Hopefully he won't turn out to be a Justice Anthony Kennedy. Here is the religious affiliation of all the members of the High Court. I thought it was interesting.
Justice Affiliation
William H. Rehnquist Lutheran
Stephen G. Breyer Jewish
Ruth Bader Ginsburg Jewish
Anthony M. Kennedy Catholic
Sandra Day O'Connor Episcopalian
Antonin Scalia Catholic
David H. Souter Episcopalian
John Paul Stevens Protestant
Clarence Thomas Catholic

Roberts:
“Roe v. Wade is the settled law of the land. … There’s nothing in my personal views that would prevent me from fully and faithfully applying that precedent.” (italics mine)
Unless his views have changed radically, I cannot have much enthusiasm regarding a man that could make the above statement.
Sorry it took me so long to reply.
I had heard of the above statement, but in its context and with the ins and outs of legalese it seems that such a statement would allow him to say that yet vote against R vs. W. See http://mediachannel.org/blog/node/277
There are two basic types of Catholics in America. Orthodox and heterodox, devout and cafeteria. By all appearances, he looks like a devout Catholic, and one who would not uphold R vs. W.
His wife was V.P. of Feminists for Life (feminists not feminazi's), he clerked for Reinquist, they have adopted two daugters, they attend an orthodox parish (http://beliefnet.com/story/171/story_17159_1.html. Certainly there are no gaurantees, but I feel rather comfortable supporting the nomination.
Pete
"settled law"....Seems like he has no problem legislating from the bench either. Really Pete, This guy is just another Neocon traitor. He also aproves of holding americans in prison without any charges or trial.
I don't get it. You list the worst court we ever had, which according to the list is made up of a majority of Jews and Catholics. Then you say your comfortable with him becouse he's a Catholic. There have been and still are some fine Catholic patriots.....Roberts ain't one of them.
Well, I think you would agree that the two best justices on the bench currently (with the passing of Reinquist) are both orthodox Catholics (Thomas and Scalia).
I don't have much to go on other than the fact that he appears to be a very faithful Catholic, there is very little judicial precident to look at in his case, which is one of the reasons he was chosen.
Time will tell.
